    Addressing the cyber safety challenge: from risk to resilience

    Addressing the cyber safety challenge: from risk to resilience describes the cyber safety issues emerging from a range of technology trends, how different populations are using technologies and the risks they face, and how we can effectively respond to each group’s unique cyber safety needs. Written by the University of Western Sydney for Telstra Corporation Ltd, the report advocates for continuing to move cyber safety from a ‘risk and protection’ framework to one that focuses on building digital resilience, as well as fostering trust and confidence in the online environment. To do this we need to: Address the needs of populations often neglected by current policies and programs – including adults, seniors, parents, and small to medium enterprises Continue to build the digital literacy skills of all populations, because digital literacy strongly influences users’ ability to engage safely online – this is best achieved by a hands-on learning approach Keep risk in perspective – the risks and benefits of digital participation go hand in hand Broaden the focus from awareness-raising to long-term behaviour change. As digital technologies become further integrated into the everyday lives of Australians, users are potentially exposed to greater risks. However, the risks and benefits of digital participation go hand in hand. The challenge, therefore, is to support users to minimise the risks without limiting their digital participation and their capacity to derive the full benefits of connectivity. If Australians are to benefit as either consumers or providers of online services and products in the e-commerce environment, consumer safety and trust need to be improved. Cyber safety needs to be considered against a transforming backdrop of technology trends, products and practices. While the rise of social media has tended to dominate recent debate and developments in cyber safety, particularly in relation to young people, a range of other trends is also shaping how users engage online, the risks they potentially face in the new media landscape, and the strategies used to address them. These trends include the rise of user generated content and content sharing platforms; the uptake of mobile technologies and, in particular, the adoption of smartphones; cloud computing; platform integration and single sign-on mechanisms; and the rise of GPS and location based services

    The Effects of Predation Risk and Thermoregulation Cost On the Foraging Behavior of the Eastern Grey Squirrel (SCIURUS CAROLINENSIS)

    In this study, the effects of predation risk and thermoregulation cost on the foraging behavior of the urban eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) were examined. There were two objectives. The first was to determine if either thermoregulation cost or predation risk had a more significant effect on foraging behavior. The second was to find out if foliar cover or distance to refuge was a more important cue of predation risk. To accomplish these goals, giving-up density and temperature data were collected at feeding trays both under the canopy and outside of the canopy at two deciduous trees and two evergreen trees. It was found that there was no difference in temperature between areas under canopy cover and areas in the open, and therefore, thermoregulation costs did not affect foraging in terms of giving-up density. Also, giving-up density was always lower under the canopy than in the open no matter how much foliar cover was available. This finding indicated that distance to refuge is a more important cue of predation risk than canopy cover. Therefore, the effect of microhabitat on foraging behavior should be taken into account when considering urban wildlife management and conservation

    What Really Matters? Evaluating the Importance of Skills for Data Analysts

    Data analysis is becoming an increasingly critical activity in today’s organizations as companies collect more data and rely on data analysis to drive decision-making. To meet this need, many universities now offer data analytics programs to train entry-level data analysts. However, the field is changing rapidly, representing a challenge to academics determining which skills and software platforms to include in a data analytics curriculum. Information systems researchers have investigated this problem, but gaps remain in our knowledge. Specifically, it is unclear how important different technical skills and tools are to managers hiring entry-level data analysts and what is expected of graduates of university data analytics programs. In this emergent research forum paper, we review the existing research on data analyst skillsets and outline a plan to bring the field up-to-date by building on the extant literature with a new focus not just on frequency of skills listed in job postings but also on their importance to today’s organizations. This work will contribute valuable findings to IS scholars developing data analytics curriculum, entry-level data analysts competing on the job market, and hiring managers staying up to date on the field’s demands

    Coureurs de Bois, Backwoodsmen As Ecocritical Motif in Four Works of French Canadian Literature

    The 17th-19th century French Canadian fur traders and interpreters called coureurs de bois and later voyageurs were known for their independence of spirit and connection to the wilds. They can also be seen as an ecocritical motif because, in addition to participating in the environmentally abusive fur trade, they also show the way forward through intercultural connections and business relationships with Amerindians. The four novels analyzed here--Taché's Forestiers et voyageurs: Moeurs et légendes canadiennes (1863); Hémon's Maria Chapdelaine (1916); Desrosiers' Les Engagés du Grand Portage (1938); and Maillet's Pélagie-la-Charrette (1979)--portray woodsmen operating in a collaborative mode within the realistic context of the need to make money. They participated in both ruthless capitalist exploitation and greater intercultural acceptance, as exemplified in Desrosiers' two opposing main characters. They entered folklore through the 19th century literary efforts of Taché and others to construct a distinct French Canadian national identity, then in an unstable and continually disrupted process of formation. Because coureurs linked the natural and human worlds as well as radically different human cultures, their entry into literature involved their Amerindian business partners, thus making intercultural connections an aspect of the national identity that Taché strove to construct and mirror. From a modern perspective, such cultural intersections pertain to the ecocritical acknowledgment of the need to respect global populations' widely varying modes of survival. Serres' Contrat naturel offers a broader proposal: that the human population, from the position of its diverse needs and power over the environment, should reach a silent contract with the rest of the planet that also acknowledges and respects its needs. The coureurs de bois and voyageurs portrayed in the works studied here embody both the problem and the way forward. They and their Amerindian partners occupy the perhaps unique position of contributing to environmental damage as well as greater understanding of the cultural other, which holds the promise of collaboration and the joint search for realistic solutions. Thus, in ways both positive and negative, coureurs de bois and voyageurs, far from perfect models, continue to serve as guides, even in today's tremendously diverse field of ecocriticism

    Surveillance practices, risks and responses in the post pandemic university

    This paper describes and critiques how surveillance is situated and evolving in higher education settings, with a focus on the surveillance of teaching and learning. It argues that intensifying practices of datafication and monitoring in universities echo those in broader society, and that the Covid-19 global pandemic has both exacerbated these practices and made them more visible. Surveillance brings risks to learning relationships and academic and work practices, as well as reinforcing economic models of extraction and inequalities in education and society. Responses to surveillance practices include resistance, advocacy, education, regulation and investment, and a number of these responses are examined here. Drawing on scholarship and practice, the paper provides an in-depth overview of this topic for people in university settings including those in leadership positions, learning technology roles, educators and students. The authors are part of an international network of researchers, educators and university leaders who are working together to develop new approaches to surveillance futures for higher education. Authors are based in Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, and this paper reflects those specific contexts

    Between-domain relations of students' academic emotions and their judgments of school domain similarity

    With the aim to deepen our understanding of the between-domain relations of academic emotions, a series of three studies was conducted. We theorized that between-domain relations of trait (i.e., habitual) emotions reflected students' judgments of domain similarities, whereas between-domain relations of state (i.e., momentary) emotions did not. This supposition was based on the accessibility model of emotional self-report, according to which individuals' beliefs tend to strongly impact trait, but not state emotions. The aim of Study 1 (interviews; N = 40;8th and 11th graders) was to gather salient characteristics of academic domains from students' perspective. In Study 2 (N = 1709; 8th and 11th graders) the 13 characteristics identified in Study 1 were assessed along with academic emotions in four different domains (mathematics, physics, German, and English) using a questionnaire-based trait assessment. With respect to the same domains, state emotions were assessed in Study 3 (N = 121; 8th and 11th graders) by employing an experience sampling approach. In line with our initial assumptions, between-domain relations of trait but not state academic emotions reflected between-domain relations of domain characteristics. Implications for research and practice are discussed
